Book Review: A fascinating insight into ‘Robbo’


As former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson fights his battle to overcome throat cancer, it becomes relevant to have a look at his 2007, 302 page paperback autobiography ‘Robbo’ in which he reveals a fascinating insight into his days with England and United. He straddles several unique eras in football, from the seventies through to Ron Atkinson in the 80′s then on to the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson, the coming of Eric Cantona and the advent of the Premier League as we know it today. Robson was nicknamed ‘Captain Marvel’ by his late, former England manager Sir Bobby Robson which aptly described a colourful, aggressive and vibrant legend.

What has taken Liverpool so long to win 19?


Here’s a crystal clear memory from a Manchester United fan. When the record equaling eighteenth championship was clinched in May 2009, the only response Liverpool fans were able to make was “What took you so long to catch up with us?” A fair enough question but another must now be just as reasonable. If title number 19 comes to Old Trafford in May – and it must be emphasised that while looking likely, it cannot yet be certain, “What has taken Liverpool so long to win it themselves?”

Foster relishes United return with Birmingham


Manchester United fans have traditionally been generous in giving former players a warm welcome whenever they return to Old Trafford with their new club. Saturday afternoon will be no different when Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster comes back to his former home for the first time since his £6million transfer in the summer. And why not? Foster made a total of 23 appearances for United during the five years he spent as a red but finally decided that the only way for his career to develop was to move elsewhere.

United happy with 3 ‘ugly’ points at West Brom


There’s an old saying in professional sport that sometimes ‘you have to win ugly’ and it could barely have been uglier than this as Manchester United grabbed their second away win of the season at West Brom. England skipper Rio Ferdinand admitted as much when he told Sky Sports “You’ve got to win games. I don’t care how we win, the three points is all that counts. You’ve got to dig deep in these games and these are the type of games you can make up a lot of ground in the league” Ferdinand added “Credit to West Brom, they played some good football. They are not scared to pass the ball around.”
