Calls by Manchester United fans for the club to buy some of Nobby Stiles’ football memorabilia put up for auction have been heeded when a World Cup and a European Cup medal were bought for more than £200,000 by United. A club spokeswoman  said Mr Stiles was a “club legend” and that the items were bought for the club’s museum. That decision raises a couple of interesting questions such as whether United also bought part of the collection recently auctioned by the family of George Best and if the Glazer family had any input in the decision.

How many English footballers are the proud owners of both a World Cup AND a European Cup Winners medals? There are only two of course, both former Manchester United players, but one of them is on the verge of selling his off. Sad? No, tragic would be a more apt description. IF, as has been suggested, a member of England’s only World Cup winning team has to sell what must be his most cherished possession for financial reasons.

For many years he had the most famous toothless gums in England. 68 year old World Cup winner Nobby Stiles suffered a minor stroke last week and spent two days in hospital but is now recovering at home according to his agent Terry Baker. The  Manchester United sixties legend suffered disorientation which was diagnosed as a Transient Ischaemic Attack and is expected to undergo surgery in a few weeks.
