Lay off Rooney for his memorable TV quote


DATELINE – Munich, March 30, 2009. A sensational season virtually came to an end for Wayne Rooney as he went down in a heap with an ankle injury seconds from the final whistle at Bayern Munich thus beginning a year made in hell for the golden boy of English football. A disastrous World Cup was soon followed by lurid tabloid headlines, a ‘dream’ marriage clearly on the rocks, lengthy court cases against him and his personal manager, a stunning transfer request which rocked the game and his personal life in total turmoil. The current season went on and on with no apparent relief – until the weekends game at West Ham.

United must now have one hand on a record title


Manchester United virtually relinquished their title almost twelve months ago to the day when they went down to Chelsea at Old Trafford. For over an hour at Upton Park it looked as if history was about to repeat itself with West Ham holding a commanding 2-0 lead. That was until Wayne Rooney finally emerged from a frustrating season to grab himself a hat trick inside a quarter hour to propel United to a 4-2 victory and go eight points clear at the top of the table.

FLASHBACK to 2001/02: A 5-3 thriller at West Ham


Eight matches remaining, 24 points up for grabs and Manchester United must get every one of them from clashes like the one at West Ham on Saturday if they want to keep their nose in front of their rivals.
