So it turned out to be the old chestnut. Did Manchester United gain a point or did they lose two in the title chase? An answer may be provided in 24 hours when Arsenal face Spurs in what could be their last chance to stay in the race. The bottom line is that United surprisingly failed to find the net for a second successive game. Credit must go to Newcastle however for a spirited defensive performance which enabled them to hang on to their point despite facing a second half barrage.

Let's be perfectly clear. This is NOT about Manchester United defender Rafael being red carded in the scoreless draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, that incident was simply the latest example of the injustices which happen in football all too frequently. All clubs have suffered by them but there's absolutely no reason why they should continue to occur. Huge amounts of money can depend on those type of split second decisions. They can make the difference between championships being won or lost, gain a money spinning spot in European competition and can even result in the ultimate penalty of relegation. The sad fact is that all these controversies can be so easily eliminated!

The first priority for Manchester United was to avoid defeat at White Hart Lane and in the end it was a case of mission accomplished. Tottenham will consider this scoreless draw a missed opportunity after defender Rafael was harshly red carded 17 minutes from the end but with captain Nemanja Vidic an absolute colossus in the centre of the defence, United held out for the point that takes them back to the top of the table with two games in hand.

The man is an undisputed football legend - not only with Manchester United fans but right throughout the game. The next time Ryan Giggs steps onto the field in a Premier League match will be appearance number 600 in the top division including 40 in the old First Division which may come as early as this weekend at White Hart Lane. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp paid tribute to the 37 year old in the lead up to Sunday’s clash saying that “He's a credit to the game for sure” Redknapp said “he's just a great player and a great lad. I don't know him very well but he's a class act on the pitch and off the pitch. He's an amazing fellow.”

When Sir Alex Ferguson was asked to nominate his favourite Manchester United game during his 24 years at Old Trafford he had no hesitation in telling the Red News magazine “The one that sticks out in my mind was when we were at Tottenham in September 2001 and were 3-0 down at half time but then we went on to beat them 5-3. It was such an amazing turnaround and the fans played their part too. It was a great game." United go back to White Hart Lane on Sunday and while it would be unreasonable to expect that sort of drama again, Ferguson will be more than happy to grab all three points once more. This is how Bill Pierce from PA Sport reported on that dramatic afternoon nearly a decade ago.

Some Manchester United fans love him, others just wish that he’ll go away. No, the word hate will not be used because nobody can possibly hate football brilliance. Personally, I have no hesitation in admitting that I love Dimitar Berbatov in a similar way that I remember Eric Cantona BUT, memories can be treacherous. Human nature dictates that the best memories linger on while the rest are shut out of our mind. Nobody can possibly claim to be a bigger disciple of the great Frenchman than me but, I also remember days when he was as frustrating as Berbatov can be today. Like it or not, we have to accept that it’s the way geniuses are.

Saturday afternoon's meeting will be no different for two players who have entirely different reasons to anxiously await the big clash. While record United signing from Spurs Dimitar Berbatov always relishes playing against his old club, media reports this morning suggest that Gareth Bale could become the main man in Sir Alex Ferguson's new look Manchester United.

Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has joined Tottenham Hotspur just two weeks after claiming it would be a step down to play for any Premier League club except Manchester United.
