Three successive man of the match performances by veteran midfielder Paul Scholes have caught the attention of France legend Zinedine Zidane. Scholes has made a sizzling start to the new season turning on man of the match displays for Manchester United in the 3-1 defeat of Chelsea in the Community Shield, Newcastle and then Fulham in the Premier League. England manager Fabio Capello is understood to still want the midfield maestro included in his squad.

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra is relieved to put his South African summer of discontent behind and concentrate on the imminent Premier League season ahead. The 29 year old is one of five players summoned by the French Football Federation to face a disciplinary hearing scheduled for later this month. As team captain Evra is facing sanctions for leading a player revolt at the World Cup but feels that he is being unfairly punished and says he wants to wear his country’s colours once again.

The old saying that success breeds success has never been better illustrated than it has at Old Trafford over the last 20 years as the silverware came in season after season.

There is media which one can have some faith in and then there are the rags. Rightly or wrongly, the Guardian is one outlet which has built up more credibility than most so when the following article appeared in their weekend edition it was difficult to ignore completely. The comment which must have raised most eyebrows was the one that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was “particularly ambiguous when he was asked directly, on four occasions, whether it was true the deposed Premier League champions were after the man who helped to eliminate England from the World Cup.”

Any Manchester United fan over the age of 25 is bound to have fond memories of the man who was an ever present in the team which brought the first League title back to Old Trafford since 1967 in the inaugural 1992-93 Premier League campaign. Brian McClair appeared in all 42 matches, hitting the net nine times in that drought breaking season.
