Sir Alex must welcome England Cup bid failure


If Sir Alex Ferguson’s recent comments were quoted accurately – and let’s face it, huge doubts must always exist, he will not be shedding any tears over England’s failure to secure the hosting rights for the 2018 World Cup. He led Scotland to Mexico ’86 but now feels that the tournament has lacked interest since Italia ’90 and that the European Champions League is a superior competition. “Have you seen the last six World Cups?” he asked “It is better going to the dentist I suppose”

United buys Nobby Stiles’ medals for club museum


Calls by Manchester United fans for the club to buy some of Nobby Stiles’ football memorabilia put up for auction have been heeded when a World Cup and a European Cup medal were bought for more than £200,000 by United. A club spokeswoman  said Mr Stiles was a “club legend” and that the items were bought for the club’s museum. That decision raises a couple of interesting questions such as whether United also bought part of the collection recently auctioned by the family of George Best and if the Glazer family had any input in the decision.

Why Rooney should ignore Europe and stay home


A close look at the still developing career of Manchester United goal scoring sensation Wayne Rooney suggests that he may be well advised to forget the riches which could be awaiting him from the likes of Real Madrid and stick to the green, green grass of home. The emphasis is of course on the word ‘MAY’ because as a wise man once pointed out “Statistics are what enables different experts using the same figures to draw different conclusions” Those statistics can nevertheless be worth having a look at because they can sometimes reveal facts which had not been previously considered.

Cantona will forever be ‘King Eric’ at Old Trafford


It has now been been 13 years since Eric Cantona played his last Premier League game for Manchester United yet the mere mention of his name still sends shivers down the spine of fans who were fortunate enough to experience his five seasons at Old Trafford. Thousands of younger fans will barely remember those halcyon days except for some images on old VHS tapes yet the stories they heard still has them in awe of the great Frenchman.
