What To Do With The 35 Year Banner?

Well, we all knew it was going to happen sooner or later. Man City have won their first major trophy since 1976, their 35 year wait is over, and with it, so is the totting up of the years on the famous banner that hangs from the south side of the Streford End.

To be honest, until I read the many comments on Facebook and the websites and forums out there, I didn’t know how much that banner meant to those City fans! For some, it appeared that the prime motive for winning a trophy was to bring that banner down, rather than to get a trophy in their own rather empty cabinet.

Anyway, it’s over, £1 billion of blood money later and they’ve rendered the banner null and void. Or have they? There’s a big dilemma here about what to do with it now. Here are some ideas:

Anyway, it’s over, £1 billion of blood money later and they’ve rendered the banner null and void. Or have they? There’s a big dilemma here about what to do with it now. Here are some ideas:

Proposition 1: Replace it with a “43” banner.

For those who are unaware, 43 years would symbolise the last time that Man City won the league title, in 1968. That’s right, the same year that United became the first English team to win the European Cup, a feat that was accomplished two weeks after City pipped us to the title.

To be honest, I see this idea as kinda clutching at straws and also tempting fate a bit. Ten years ago did it seem City would end what was then a 25-year run without a major trophy? No. But one rich oil-baron later and here we are.

Proposition 2: Leave it at “35”, as a reminder

I kinda like this idea. A reminder for City that, were it not for the millions of corrupt pounds injected into them by a Middle Eastern consortium, they’d, in all probability, still be languishing in what was a purgatory of an existence. It may also remind them of a time of when they supposedly had that beloved moral high ground of theirs.

Proposition 3: Replace it with a “19” banner

For me, this is probably the best idea. Basking in our own unprecedented and unparalleled glory rather than in the misery of others, this would purely be a statement of our domestic dominance of the English game, a reminder of the depth of our history and the magnanimity of our achievements.

Again, I don’t want to tempt fate, Fergie’s first league title in 1993 made it 18-8, and I don’t think any Liverpool fan anywhere could have imagined us ever surpassing their total. But 19-2? It is a dangerous game to play, but I’m sure that our good friend Mr Financial Fair Play will ensure that the blue pretenders can’t buy too many more trophies for £1 billion.

So ideas in the comments section below and we’ll see what people can come up with!

  • Why dont you just take it and shove it right up that backside of yours that you so often talk out of.

    I thank you……..

  • The Shiekh’s money is “corrupt?” I’d love an explanation as to how that can be true, since it was earned through legitimate means and spent on players, administration, and Manchester infrastructure as a way of heightening the status of the club. Is this not what Roman did at Chelsea? And does United not purchase players regularly?

  • How about we take it down altogether and stop giving them added incentive to win things

  • I think we should gather up all the rags who sit in the stretford end of old toilet, form a human centipede out of them and then shove the banner up your collective rectums.

  • city destroying football since 2008. we never got to 37 like manu! hahahahahahahahahaha. x.

  • Thieves broke into Manchester City’s trophy room last night and made off with a big silver cup with blue and white ribbons on it. Hang on, that old joke doesn’t work anymore either. Guess what? Nobody cares about your banner outside of you lot!

This is just the beginning, and BTW the stuff about ‘blood money’ inferring bought success rather rings hollow coming from a Rag. It almost sounds a tad bitter…

Try enjoying your own team’s triumph instead of obsessing about us all the time, eh?

  • 🙂 to be honest having spoke to a lot of city fans yesterday it’s clear that we couldn’t care less about what you do next. Whatever you do will only add to your fear of our imminent takeover as the best current side in England. We will probably start some banners of our own up to remind you that your manager wasn’t bothered about you getting thumped by us in the semi 😉

The blood money statements about city’s owners I’m pretty sure is a slanderous remark and think you need to reword your waffle before you get sued?

35 years and we’re still here? But now you know we’re here so get used to it… The wheels have been set in motion and your decline is already underway 🙂

  • You could take that pathetic banner and replicate it into bed linen, pillow cases and quilt covers to remind you of your sheer and utter arrogance.

It will also serve as a reminder that Manchester City are back so if you want to keep it up, I am sure all City fans would be overjoyed.

Or you could cut it up into pieces and raffle it off to try save your club from the next ten or so years of scraping the bottom of the debt encrusted barrel.

  • Perhaps you could have one for 38 years, i.e. the longest time you went without a trophy as that is a record you can now keep !
Blood money ??? What are you on ! At least we are sitting on no debt and i don’t think “our friend” financial fair play will help you. I suspect we will spend a few million this summer which will be offset by the players who leave. We are about to sell naming rights and our sponsorship will go up in view of our CL entry.
How’s the signing of your new player going – Number £150m P.A. Mr Debt Repayment.

  • reset it to zero and keep it there cos we will be winning trophys every season now..i hope barca really give you salford rovers lot a fookin good hiding.
    ctid

  • I like the 2nd proposition. Leave the banner there. That would be good fun with them talking about finally taking the banner down. Better yet we can display our own 19th title banner alongside it.

  • Well well, hasn’t this set off a few nutters?

@Nate: It’s the origin of the money, not what it was spent on, that makes it corrupt. It is what Roman did at Chelsea, and his fortune was hardly gained at the expense of nobody else (suggest you read up more on the early days of post-Soviet Russia). The money that United have spent over the years has been internally generated revenue. A bit different.

@Slacker: As reported in Red Issue, City’s owners funded the hiring of policemen to “quell” protests in the Middle East.

Yeah, our debt is going to kill us eh? It’s a hinderance of course, hence the protests, but unlike yourselves we’re a profitable club. FFP will only help our cause. £150m in interest payments? From which arse of yours did you pull that figure from?

City’s accounts are fucked because you have bought so many players in the past few years that you need to amortise their cost over the coming few. The hit to the P&L will be huge.

  • Well you’re in BILLIONS £$£$£$£$£$ of debt, and the only reason you keep winning is because the refs are bent and you cheat…This is where your decline starts. So do what you like with that shitty banner because this is the first of many trophies for the ONLY TEAM TO COME FROM MANCHESTER!!! MANCHESTER CITY!!!!

  • I think we should give the banner to City, so when the debt that the Glaziers have loaded onto us begins to drag us down competitively, they can tot up our unsuccessful seasons.

If there is one thing this credit crunch has tought us, its that debt is a real, tangible thing, and even the biggest institutions can fail.

I think two unsuccessful seasons would be disasterous for us, financially, and for our flimsier world fanbase.

I’m from manchester. If I wasn’t a gloryhunter, I wouldn’t have chosen Utd over City when I was picking a team to support as a kid. If the glory stops, why would kids choose our referee-mobbing, welsh bird off big brother-super-injuncting welsh winger club in the future?

  • How about just leave it up there and counting till they win a proper trophy. Could go on for century’s.

  • Ye keep it up and knock it up by 38 years to remind you of your trophy drought seeing as you hold the record.

  • to say that you citeh fans dont care makes me laugh, the majority of comments on here are from bitter blues. Citeh taking over, well lets just see shall we. The problem with you lot is you misguided, you finish 4th and claim the fa cup, and you think you have arrived in the promise land. ffs come back and crow when you’ve dominate English football for a few years, until then wind your necks in, after all 1 fa cup doesnt make you the best team in England, except perhaps in your own little minds.
By the way you better sell your naming rights for a lot of money, if your gonna stay away from the financial fair play rules as martin seems to think.
    19 times and thats a fact…..

  • Cheers for that Ben, using a tragedy in which 23 people died (including one of your own) as a stick to beat us with. Classy bunch.

  • why not auction it for charity then some good can come from this spiefull piece of rubbish

  • Here’s a suggestion. “You can stick your f**king banner up your arse!”
“You can stick your f**king banner up your arse!”
“You can stick your f**king banner!”
“You can stick your f**king banner!”
“Stick your f**king banner up your arse!”

In a nutshell just take it down you obsessed bunch of freaks.

  • And Frank as well! Cheers for that Frank, you’ve contributed a lot to society there.

  • I think we should stop talking about them. We’ve just won the title, ffs, and are playing in another European Cup Final, yet large numbers of our ‘supporters’ would rather talk about them lot. It’s weird. Very weird. They’ve won ONE trophy, who cares?

The question some of our fans need to ask themselves is this – Do they love United more than they hate City? I’m not sure with some, i have to be honest.

  • This buffoon states how obsessed city fans were to win a cup in the knowledge that the infamous banner would be taken down. Clearly you don’t know what obsession is. Remind me who had the banner up in the first place. You also mention billions, you must mean your billions of debt. Now run along bitter jealous fool and enjoy your prem title it’s your last so savour it
The bluemoon has risen, be afraid be very afraid.

  • Right folks, I can’t carry on going onto the site and approving all these wonderful comments all day, got stuff to do, but you keep up the Munich taunts and see where that gets ya.

    Cheers,

    -Tom

  • Keep it as 35 as a reminder – that way we can still sing “35 years….FUCK ALL”. Uniteds success was engineered by a grea manager and youth system. City’s ‘success’ if it ever happens will be created by a corrupt Arab who couldn’t give a fuck about football or what it means to us fans. A club with great tradition and trophies to match, or a team with bottomless pits of cash and an FA Cup.

    United -> Citeh

  • Dancing on the heads of a pin ! Perhaps you should have put a little asterix by the banner with the terms and conditions that you wanted to put by it.
It’s the origin of the money that is corrupt and then you start talking about Roman’s money !! Funny man.
Quoting Red Issue that is top ! A well known and respected reporting web site on the middle east !! Having said that you seem to want it both ways. the origin of the money and then how they allegedly spend it. Our Government hires policemen who quell protests.
It’s a good thing you haven’t bought anyone over the last few years so you won’t need to amortise that either.
On a slightly more serious note i don’t actually see FFP coming into play at all. It is clearly in breach of the Treaty of Rome. The clubs will go along with it until there is a threat that they will be denied a place in the CL. Then all hell will break loose. The secretary of UEFA has already said that the scheme is designed to help clubs achieve the goal and they will work together to do that, it is unlikely sanctions will be imposed at the end of the 3 year period. Richard Scudamore has said that he doesn’t see the ultimate sanction being imposed or threatened for some time. During which time the City accounts will work through the problems as the extra income achieved will kick in from the CL and other competitions. As well as the additional sponsorship that being in those competitions will help achieve at a market rate !
Oh and the money that we will receive from the investment in the immediate area of the ground which will also bring in income.
If i were you i would leave it up, not sure the club can afford to re-paint underneath it !!

  • @CollyhurstRedArmy – Just like the Carling cup was the biggest cup in the whole wide world last season? You have the cheek to call us bitter? Well we’re once again shopping at Fortnum and Mason while old Baconface will be looking in B&M Bargains sale bin.

  • I think you should keep it up. It will serve as a monument to how petty and stupid your fans are every time it appears on TV. Go for it!

  • Sad to see people using the M word. Still we don’t see T Shirts about Heysel like the Republik of Mancunia ! I would rather City didn’t use the phrase as it is about people’s deaths and i am sad for those of both sides who died in the tragic event. That is without going in to how little the club did for the survivors or the families of the dead at the time. Or the fact that King Eric charged the Trust nearly £95k for playing in a testimonial game.
I seem to recall that the Trophy SAF won first was the FA Cup in his 5th season in charge. Wasn’t such an unimportant one then was it ??

  • Tbh there should have been a disclaimer at the end of the article about the “obsession” argument. It’s nothing but a lazy cliché.

I’ve been celebrating our record 19th title as much as the next man, but it’s not like we can just avoid the issue of the banner. When we wrapped it all up against Blackburn, Man City were very far from the thoughts of United fans.

@Martin: I think you’re right, Swiss Ramble have had a couple of great articles on City’s financial position, but UEFA aren’t going to want to lose face in all of this. I’m not as anti-Platini as a lot of people out there are, I believe that they have good intentions, which is to address the competitive balance problem in European football and to save clubs from themselves (financially). But the rule that forces you to value revenue streams at fair value is going to be a tricky one. As is the development of the area near the ground. And our amortisation charge for the year is going to be nowhere near yours!

@Ste: Yes Ste, we spent lots of money, but it was internally generated. What City and Chelsea are doing is skewing the league massively.

  • Poor spelling, vulgar language, mocking the dead…. Congratulations your nearly as disgusting as the Celtic and Rangers shirt wearing inhabitants of Glasgow and Belfast.

  • What on earth is the auther talking about when he mentions “blood money”?? The Edwards family who financed Trafford for years were butchers…..so who is backed by blood money??
Anyway, do whatever you like with your shitty banner, we couldnt give a toss. We shall be far too busy conquering the world and laughing at you cockney fools. Keep wearing your Norwich City scarves you bunch of bitter clowns.
This city is ours, and you shitbags know it !!

  • Conquering the world? Lmao, some of you really are delusional and delirious! You’ve won an FA Cup and finished 4th place in the league, long way to go yet, calm down.

And the City is yours? 20,000 empty seats? Are you fuckin sure?

  • 1. Stop using the Munich crap to wallow in your own self pity. It happened a long long time ago so FFS get over it. Worse shit has happened since then.
Also a bit hypocritical of you considering some of your own chants to the likes of Liverpool and others.

    2. Quit with this “Bitter Blue” shit. From the rag comments that constantly crop up on various forums that dont even concern you, I would say it is you that is bitter and twisted.

    3. Man Utd are in a ridiculous ammount of debt and you need to face that fact before you spout your crap about our money.

    4. Why can you not face the reality that Man City are a very real threat to your precious prem title. I feel that your comments hide a nervousness that you dont know how to deal with.

    5. As for the banner….. Keep it up. It can stay there as a symbol of your fickle arrogant nature that every other team in the Premiership have come to despise. True champions are those that are gracefull in defeat and humble with success. Man Utd are neither.

  • THIS CITY IS OURS, THIS CITY IS OURS, PISS OFF BACK TO LONDON THIS CITY IS OURS!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @Peter, you clown. ‘Your nearly’, indeed. Start giving English lessons once you’ve mastered the language yourself!

    Very amusing.

  • Shouldn’t we be celebrating a dual success for Manchester(ish) clubs today?
For what its worth and as a blue, I say leave the banner up and also put up one with “19” too. It illustrates the arrogance, lack of class and lack of humility that is the embodiment of your club, from the manager to players. Giggs excepted. a proper professional who must squirm at the foaming, neanderthal and foul-mouthed goal celebrations of others in your team Herein lies the reason why your club will never be respected like the successful Liverpool sides, regardless of how many trophies you win.
Trophies and arrogance you have in abundance but the cabinet for class, respect and humility have been empty for many years. CTID.

  • As a City fan and a Mancunian I’m proud of City winning the cup and United winning the league.

Anyway this article mentions City being obsessed with United with absolutely no evidence to back it up, whereas this article is evidence enough of some United fans obsession with City. The fact you had a banner dedicated to us only compounds it, and the fact it’s at the forefront of your mind right now is just comical. You just won your 19th title and have a CL final (I will be hoping United beat Barca) to look forward to, yet all you can do is talk about the Blues. I can assure you that the banner does not wind up any City fans, it just makes some United fans feel smug (as if they weren’t smug enough already).

My facebook was full of City fans celebrating and United fans giving credit where it was due. As a Manc my mates are either reds or blues, there’s banter but we have enough of a life not to get bitter and twisted over United/City.

The internet seems to be a breeding ground for sad United fans who can’t accept that they might not be the only team lifting trophies. To mock us for spending money is ridiculous, in this day and age it’s the only way to bridge the gap and the only way City and Spurs have managed to break the top 4.

I hope the top 2 next year are United and City (City first obviously – haha yeah I can dream) and this is the beginning of a proper rivalry where we can actually battle with United for trophies every year.

Looking forward to the Charity Shield…

  • Well done to city on winning the cup. It’ll look nice next to Bert Trautmann’s helmet in the trophy cabinet. That banner was the only reason I wanted Stoke to win, cause it made me laugh and it really wound my cousin up.
I think we should just take it down and find another way to wind them up. It can’t be that hard.
I don’t think winning the cup means anything – in terms of testing how good a club are the FA cup and carling cup are exactly the same. And it involves a lot of luck. But Birmingham won the carling cup, a few years ago Portsmouth won the FA cup. It doesn’t mean they’re the best teams, or it doesn’t mean they’re gonna go on a winning streak.
Of course city are going in the right direction but itd be just like them to think the league is won already and cock it up.
The thing about citys money it that it isn’t citys money…that’s what winds up united fans.
When Fergie took over we had no money, the first team that won the league wasn’t full of massive names and big wages. And in the mid 90’s the core of the team was out of our youth system. The money we spent on the van nistelrooys, verons, Ferdinands etc came from the club being successful. We earned our money. And we’re still making more money than most other clubs – united are the only club in England who could handle this kind of debt.
The point is United were rich cause we won things. With City its the other way round. They’re gonna win things because they’re rich. And they don’t deserve to be rich. Mansour probably picked their name out of a hat or something. If he pulled out, city would probably go out of business.

  • Leave your banner up for all you want. You will never realise what a motivation it has been to everyone at City. To change the banner to anything else would clearly show you are despite all your words to the contrary beginning to get very rattled.

The fact is it doesn’t matter what’s been and gone, the fact is feelings and happiness is current and can’t be felt in the past! As it stands this morning, this season sees our current trophy score for this season as 1-1. You may win the European Cup and we may well win the Community Shield, who knows, but currently it’s this season that counts and it’s 1-1, fact.

If it was 100% about what’s already happened and not about the present then the fans of the Wanderers (FA Cup) and Preston North End (League) would be telling everyone how great their teams are, fact is they aren’t because memories fade and honour’s list are just historical records of days past. Anyway, one thing is for certain and it’s the fact that if I had to bet on who is going to win most trophies over the next 20 years then my money is on City!

Most reds know this and the realisation of this is killing them.

  • 99% Bitter comments. FFS get a life, it is only as game. Who gves a ufck how many years it has been since this side or that side won this or that.

Enjoy the beautiful game whilst you can and stop being so ufcking childish.

    Kids, Bah!

  • “Keep it as 35 as a reminder – that way we can still sing “35 years….FUCK ALL”. Uniteds success was engineered by a grea manager and youth system. City’s ‘success’ if it ever happens will be created by a corrupt Arab who couldn’t give a fuck about football or what it means to us fans. A club with great tradition and trophies to match, or a team with bottomless pits of cash and an FA Cup.”

And they call us bitter? Please Rai, try and get over your obsession with us before it manes you an even bigger mentalist than you already are.

  • “And the City is yours? ”

It always was thanks, now fuck off back to Trafford like a good little Rag.
