However, I would argue that it’s necessary to consider a club’s success in all tournaments before arriving at such a conclusion. Further consideration has to be given to the value of each competition (i.e, a Champions League victory is greater than a League Cup victory), therefore to fairly assess who really does sit on the perch, it is necessary to give a priority score to each tournament. The fairest way I could put this was:
European Cup/Champions League = 5 points for each tournament won.
League Champions = 4 points for each title won.
Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup = 3 points for each tournament won.
FA Cup = 2 points for each tournament won.
League Cup = 1 point for each tournament won.
I am not including the European Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup, World Club Championship or the Charity Shield, as all are more exhibition matches than proper tournaments.
If you tally Man Utd’s victories in each competition and multiply by the appropriate score, they reach a total of 120 points. They will score 125 if they beat Barca in this year’s Champions League final.
Liverpool on the other hand currently score 127 points, therefore in my completely impartial opinion, Liverpool are yet to be knocked off top spot. Sorry United fans, but Fergie’s work still isn’t done.

For years, once United got going in the EPL, Liverpool fans trundled out their total of championships won in mocking fashion, as per the ‘come back and see us when you’ve won 18’ placards. Now that United fans are making those same Liverpool fans eat crow, all you can do is reach desperately for a calculator to sidestep the snide challenge that has been met! Aside from your selective application of what is and isn’t relevant to your childish appraisal, one might as well argue the merits of United accomplishing what Liverpool couldn’t, which was to be the first English team to win the European championship. Or should one delve into history and draw up a points appraisal of how many championships United were denied by the Munich disaster – a scenario which also helped Liverpool. You’re a typically ungracious scouse loser who has nothing left to dwell on these days but memories of distant days when Liverpool could still manage to win a championship or two. Keep feeding away on your envy, pal.
As I’ve said before, United could stand to lose twice a year to Liverpool if it still meant winning the championship. Pool supporters are so eaten up by hatred of United’s success, and the fact that it’s left Liverpool picking up the crumbs, that they’d rather take the wins over United and screw winning the EPL. That’s how much they’ve lost perspective these days.
I sat around for nearly thirty years watching as United had to play second fiddle to Liverpool’s long run of success in the 70’s and 80’s, and one had to admire the way successive managers kept building winning sides with the likes of Keegan, Dalglish, Rush, etc. Now that the shoe’s on the other foot, it’s a sad sight to see just what a classless bunch so many Liverpool fans really are.

I look at the teams that Liverpool played to win their European Cups and clearly back in the 70’s the level of competition wasn’t so great. Had that Liverpool team which was all about strength and long ball played today’s level of football, they’d have won Nothing! And my argument is backed up by the fact that both Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa won in between Liverpool that time. So facts speak for themselves. Much same way you have to discount Madrid’s first 5 cups as they had no competition either. To most football people, Man United is the most successful English side to have graced the game much as AC Milan are the most successful European side. And the chance of Liverpool ever winning the league again. Well read Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. Times change. More competition now much like in Europe than the time Liverpool were dominant. Read it and weep redjonjo. Liverpool won in a time they were playing championship teams in Europe. A look at your finals proves that. Ha ha ha

Example – Champions 5 points, Runners-up 3 points, 2nd Runners-up 1 point, the rest – 0 point.
