Despite the heavy 0-4 defeat suffered at West Ham in the Carling Cup last week, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to again leave a number of senior players out of his starting lineup for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Valencia. Both clubs have already qualified for the knockout round although top spot in Group C is still up for grabs. United have 13 points from five games and will win the group if they avoid defeat against the Spaniards.

The 4-0 thumping West Ham handed to Manchester United last night was not the first, nor will it be the last of such upsets in the Carling Cup. Remember Coventry City at Old Trafford three years ago? The second tier side avoided relegation by just one point that season while United went on to win the second of three successive Premier League titles yet the champions were bundled out of the cup by two goals from little known Michael Mifsud who has barely been heard of again.

Copping a 4-0 drubbing should never be this painless! It may not exactly be a humiliation but it should still hurt so why does last night's hammering at West Ham be seen as no more than a glitch? That long unbeaten record enjoyed by Manchester United had to come to an end eventually and when it did, the Carling Cup was always the best competition to lose it. That will be little consolation for manager Sir Alex Ferguson who hates being beaten at anything but fielding what can only be described as a second string line up against a desperately committed West Ham, the defeat should not come as that much of a shock – except for the 0-4 score line and a surprisingly lack of desire from a side managed by Ferguson.

Amongst the large number of squad changes Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to make for Manchester United's Carling Cup meeting with West Ham, nobody will be looking forward to the quarter final more than defender Wes Brown. First team appearances are few and far between these days making the veteran eager to get the most of the opportunities he gets before his advancing years catch up. Now past his 31st birthday and with his present contract due to expire at the end of next season, Brown is not sure how much time he has left at Old Trafford. There have even been suggestions that the former England international could be leaving United during one of the next two transfer windows.

Forget about your £200,000 a week footballers, multi million pound transfer deals, 25 year club managers like Sir Alex Ferguson, FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s World Cup and the mega buck television deals. Ask yourselves instead ‘Where will football be without the humble fan?’ You never see any lurid headlines in the newspapers about them unless a handful of alcohol fuelled ones create mayhem like the incidents after the Napoli game in Liverpool. Thankfully, for every one of those cretins there are thousands like Manchester United besotted Peter Bolton who was recognised by the official club website this week.

Hang on to your hats folks, there’s a wild ride coming up. Nine critical matches in 28 days to be exact with the home, fourth round Carling Cup clash with Wolves the only one in which the pressure may not be quite as great. Mind you, although that competition is admittedly not the highest of priorities, the prospect of winning it three successive times is quite a tasty one. It will be a month that may well define the whole season but as we have seen many times before, Sir Alex Ferguson has been there and done it time and time again.

The former England international is pencilled in to turn out against the Wolves in the Carling Cup in less than a month but it still remains difficult to believe after so many false hopes were raised in the past. An EXCLUSIVE byAidan Magee on Sunday revealed the unexpected news but BEWARE, nothing was quoted by anyone and for all we know it may be no more than a personal opinion of his.
