Watching the thumping Barcelona inflicted on Real Madrid at the Camp Nou in the Classico last night, my mind could not help wandering what major football clubs – including Manchester United, has in store for their fans in the next 10 or 20 years. A world wide audience of half a billion viewers – read that slowly, yes, 500 million, was estimated to have watched that game on television, internet, mobile phones and whatever else modern technology can provide. Ask yourself, what else will that same technology be able to offer us in the next decade or two?

A strong argument can be mounted that a horrendous injury list during the last campaign made the difference between Manchester United winning a fourth successive Premier League title and narrowly missing out by a mere point. Without wishing to give an impression that everything is all doom and gloom, signs are beginning to emerge that history may be about to repeat itself. The only exception being the unexpected early return of England international midfielder Michael Carrick.

Truly Reds has never been radical or politically driven nor is it about to start preaching anarchy now. We believe however, that the time has come for football fans to take control of their clubs from the Gordon Gekko type greedy tycoons who are slowly destroying our great clubs and even the game itself. All shades of governments and self appointed football guardians like the FA, UEFA and FIFA are either unable or, more than likely unwilling, to stop OUR clubs from being financially driven out of existence by corporations who only see them as a means of making a quick, few million bucks. Football has sadly become all about the might dollar.

The intense rivalry between them even overshadows the local derbies against Everton and Manchester City which makes this Sunday’s meeting at Old Trafford one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the season.

When we emphasise that Truly Reds is a Manchester United blog for Manchester United fans, it may sound like the bleedin’ obvious but there’s a reason why that basic statement needs to be made on this occasion. Truly Reds has written in the past about the rising costs of watching football and how the game as we know it faces a bleak future. It’s a future which every fan should be worried about whether they support United or any other club which is why the following essay from a Liverpool fan is being featured in this Manchester United blog. Just replace any reference to LFC with United or any other Premier League club and these comments become equally applicable.

Michael Owen was pulled out of the hat by Sir Alex Ferguson this time last year, the general consensus was that the former England striker was being given a final chance to resurrect his injury riddled career. That’s not an opinion which sits well with him however “The amount of injuries I have had is exaggerated” he insists “it can be annoying but you learn to live with it.”

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of what is fast becoming the transfer saga of the summer? The headlines first scream that Werder Bremen is about to get an offer from Sir Alex Ferguson for their 21 year old German international Mesut Ozil but then we read that Ozil has signed an agreement with Real Madrid to move to Spain after completing his contract in 12 months time. There are now reports that Ozil is pleading for his club to reduce the £16m asking price. If that’s true, it’s the clearest indication yet that the talented midfielder has no intention of waiting to get away on a ‘Bosman’ next year. So what’s going on?
