I was on TV this week which in itself is a monumental moment for an ordinary man. I was asked which was the my most memorable moment from the Manchester derby and my reply was the come-from-behind win in 1993 in the old Maine Road when United responded from going 2-0 down to beat City 3-2 on their old turf. That was the first most memorable derby for me as a Manchester United fan and first impressions last a lifetime. Since that match in 1993, a lot has changed between both sides and there have been other memorable derby ties as well as matches that have sickened us as United fans with results and performances going against us. The most recent and the one that has the biggest negative impact on us as a club would have to be the 6-1 trouncing at Old Trafford this season. Older generations would remember a time when Red Devils legend, Denis Law back-heeled a winner to send United into the Second Division as well as a tie in 1989 when United were hammered 5-1 by City in Maine Road.

Eight wins in a row, eight points clear at the top at the end of the game against Queen’s Park Rangers in a carnival atmosphere at Old Trafford. Inevitably, at the end of the game, most of the questions were about the controversial sending off of QPR’s captain, Shaun Derry and the subsequent penalty. Mark Hughes, an undoubted club legend was left fuming at the end of the first half and the match and for a club fighting for its lives near the bottom of the table, his fury is justifiable. On the positive side for Sparky, his nearest rivals at the wrong end of the table all lost the day before and due to Blackburn Rover’s defeat, QPR are out of the relegation zone by virtue of a better goal difference compared to Blackburn.

There was an explosion of joy at the final whistle at the Darwen End of Ewood Park. Manchester United fans have a reason to celebrate as they came away from Ewood Park with 3 points and in that process, extended their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League to 5 points over nearest rival, Manchester City. The fact that the rival is City made the celebrations sweeter but the a word of caution, the league is not over yet so keep the celebrations in check.

One game less, eight games to go, three points clear on top of the English Premier League, on a run of 9 wins in the last 10 league matches; a good run of form. This is made more impressive by the fact that during this run, Manchester United have faced their toughest challengers and closest rivals in terms of history or league position; Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs. If the Red Devils maintain this form for the remainder of the season which includes a very short trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City, we would be celebrating another title triumph come 13th of May 2012 away in the Stadium of Light against Sunderland. Added to the form of the team would be the fact that United’s players have the experience of seeing out a title run-in and emerging victorious. Everything seems to be going well and according to plan. Nothing to worry about? You would be wrong to think as such.

In his pre-match press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson called for his players to wake up in Europe at Old Trafford. His comments weren’t heeded as we slumped to yet another defeat at home in Europe. That’s 1 win in 5 home European ties now. Manchester United were well and truly beaten by Athletic Club Bilbao and the score-line is flattering to the Red Devils as they were convincingly played off the park by the Spanish team. There would have been no injustice at all if the Red Devils were beaten by more than a 1 goal margin.

All over the world, headlines would be written about Ryan Giggs getting a late winner for Manchester United in his 900th appearance for the club. Let's rewind a bit to the start of the game and it sure did bring back some memories of meetings in the early years of the Premier League between the two clubs when Norwich City were one of United's closest challenger for the title in the inaugral year of the English Premier League. The season was 1992-93 and Ryan Giggs ended the season with his first ever Premier League winners medal around his neck as well as the PFA Young Player of The Year award.

Two wins out of two, six goals scored and only one conceded post the black, dark and gloomy night of Basel. The first performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers was very good as we banged in 4 goals, breaking out of the 1 goal trend of the matches prior to that. However, the lunchtime kickoff against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road was slated to be a tougher match for the Red Devils and we came through it with a much-needed clean sheet and dominating performance in the final third with the abundance of chances created. The United fans who were closer to the field really added to the atmosphere and it is always nice to see the fans having a blast. Pre-game my thoughts drifted back to the meetings of the 90s when most often than not, United had to slog it out for a win there. We were made to work hard this time too but perhaps not as hard as an uncharacteristic solo run and shot by Michael Carrick finished off the encounter. QPR couldn’t manage a goal to test our nerves at the end so we saw the match out and picked up 3 points smilingly.
