There was an explosion of joy at the final whistle at the Darwen End of Ewood Park. Manchester United fans have a reason to celebrate as they came away from Ewood Park with 3 points and in that process, extended their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League to 5 points over nearest rival, Manchester City. The fact that the rival is City made the celebrations sweeter but the a word of caution, the league is not over yet so keep the celebrations in check.

One game less, eight games to go, three points clear on top of the English Premier League, on a run of 9 wins in the last 10 league matches; a good run of form. This is made more impressive by the fact that during this run, Manchester United have faced their toughest challengers and closest rivals in terms of history or league position; Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs. If the Red Devils maintain this form for the remainder of the season which includes a very short trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City, we would be celebrating another title triumph come 13th of May 2012 away in the Stadium of Light against Sunderland. Added to the form of the team would be the fact that United’s players have the experience of seeing out a title run-in and emerging victorious. Everything seems to be going well and according to plan. Nothing to worry about? You would be wrong to think as such.

In his pre-match press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson called for his players to wake up in Europe at Old Trafford. His comments weren’t heeded as we slumped to yet another defeat at home in Europe. That’s 1 win in 5 home European ties now. Manchester United were well and truly beaten by Athletic Club Bilbao and the score-line is flattering to the Red Devils as they were convincingly played off the park by the Spanish team. There would have been no injustice at all if the Red Devils were beaten by more than a 1 goal margin.

We witnessed a weird game last night. Manchester United didn’t play well at all but ended with a score-line that we barely deserved and one that didn’t quite tell the true story of the match. We have been here before; if you are trying to recall when, let me remind you. It was in the early months of the season when we entertained another London club, Chelsea at Old Trafford. That match was made weirder by the incredible miss of our nemesis, Fernando Torres. Last night at White Hart Lane, our good record against Tottenham Hotspurs was upheld and Spurs would be left wondering what more do they need to do to beat us. A visit to a witch doctor might help Spurs but I don’t encourage it at all.

All over the world, headlines would be written about Ryan Giggs getting a late winner for Manchester United in his 900th appearance for the club. Let's rewind a bit to the start of the game and it sure did bring back some memories of meetings in the early years of the Premier League between the two clubs when Norwich City were one of United's closest challenger for the title in the inaugral year of the English Premier League. The season was 1992-93 and Ryan Giggs ended the season with his first ever Premier League winners medal around his neck as well as the PFA Young Player of The Year award.

A big sigh of relief at the end of the game but why did we have to sigh at the end when it was so comfortable for so long in the match? It was because once Manchester United took a 2 goal lead, United decided to take the foot off the pedal and instead of passing forwards, United decided to pass sideways instead. United could have scored three maybe four maybe if United had decided to keep attacking and keep up the pressure on Liverpool. At the end of the match, we cannot help but feel satisfied and extremely delighted to have beaten our hated and hostile rivals, Liverpool in one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the English and world football calendar. I think all of us, Manchester United fans, could relate with Patrice Evra’s celebration at the end of the match because that is how we felt and given a choice, we might do the same.

The statistics this morning read; Manchester United joint top but still second in the table due to an inferior goal difference compared to that of Manchester City. Our neighbours lost thanks to a goal by an ex-Red Devil, the most recent one to move to the blue half of Liverpool, Darron Gibson. Ironically, his departure might have brought about some cheers among United fans all over the world and what is more ironic, is that perhaps his goal in the blue of Everton must have been cheered loudest by United fans; louder than any that he has scored while wearing the red of Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson has spent 25 years as the manager of Manchester United and he has won the Premier League 12 times, FA Cup 5 times, League Cup 4 times, the Champions League twice, 10 Community/Charity Shields and one each of the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup, Intercontinental Cup, FIFA World Club Cup and UEFA Super Cup. In his time, he has build and rebuilt at least 4 teams that have contributed in a large part to the trophies he has won and the legacy he has built at Old Trafford. The biggest and the highlight of all his achievements would undoubtedly be the Treble of 1999. Hours away from our big FA Cup tie against our neighbours and current Premier League leaders, Manchester City, let’s look back to understand how special the Treble triumph was. What better way to do that then by assessing the trophies that we missed out on, on a couple of occasions as one of Sir Alex’s great teams went close to winning the Treble before and after 1999.
