Manchester United travel to Newcastle just three days after hopes of another treble was snuffed out at Wembley but when the 'impossible dream' was achieved in 1999, it was the same Toon who provided one of the last hurdles for United. The FA Cup Final was the second of the three trophies which had to be won in order to keep the dream alive, leaving only Big Ears needing to be lifted in Barcelona four days later. As Mark Bradley from PA Sport reported at the time "Their night of destiny now awaits them in the Nou Camp but for the time being United can celebrate their third Double of the 1990s"

Not a thought that will go down well with many United fans but the truth is that there may just be some sense in the possibility. Rooney has just completed a year of hell both on and off the field before finally regaining his sensational goalscoring form recently.

It’s a well known fact that newspapers are not exactly the bastions of truth but there are a few which have proven to be more reliable than others. The Guardian is one of them. If you can believe what it is reporting, Manchester United is looking for not one but TWO goalkeepers to replace veteran Edwin van der Sar when his imminent retirement is eventually announced. According to a report, United has “provisionally agreed a £3.5m deal to replace van der Sar with a goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has flatly described as not good enough to play for the club. Anders Lindegaard, the newly established Danish international, will move to Old Trafford in January but Schmeichel thinks Sir Alex Ferguson is making a serious error bringing in the 26 year old from the Norwegian club Aalesunds FK.

So here’s a piece put together by the Manchester Evening News which could help sooth those nerves. It has selected the ultimate Manchester United starting eleven based on legends who have made the most appearances for the club. A total of 6,500 were made between them and a flexible 4-4-2 formation - with a touch of journalistic license here and there, was used to come up with this star studded, long service line up.

When it comes to transfer gossip, the media does not have any bigger target than Manchester United. Most are pure lies and not worth the paper that they’re written on -like this week’s report that United will be going into a January battle with Manchester City for the signature of Liverpools Fernando Torres. City? Maybe, but an Anfield hero to United can be no more than pure fantasy. When the rumour comes out of the horses mouth however, you have to think that there must be more than a hint of truth in the story.

“Destiny” is such an abused word in everyday football language! Everything and everyone seems to be “destined” for something or other. “We were always destined to win this or that game” or “The boy was destined for greatness” How often have you heard the word used, many times without any real justification?
