Eight wins in a row, eight points clear at the top at the end of the game against Queen’s Park Rangers in a carnival atmosphere at Old Trafford. Inevitably, at the end of the game, most of the questions were about the controversial sending off of QPR’s captain, Shaun Derry and the subsequent penalty. Mark Hughes, an undoubted club legend was left fuming at the end of the first half and the match and for a club fighting for its lives near the bottom of the table, his fury is justifiable. On the positive side for Sparky, his nearest rivals at the wrong end of the table all lost the day before and due to Blackburn Rover’s defeat, QPR are out of the relegation zone by virtue of a better goal difference compared to Blackburn.

Despite a lifetime of football glory, Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has never forgotten how tough a miner’s lot can be simply because he came from a family of them – including his father. It therefore comes as no surprise that Charlton has issued an invitation to the 33 trapped miners in Chile with an invitation to watch United play at Old Trafford once they are freed. The release of those miners is inching closer following two months of being entombed underground with their rescue mission expected to be completed by the weekend.

Mention the name of Sir Bobby Charlton anywhere in the world and what’s the first thing that’s likely to come to mind? England 1966? World Cup Winner? The odds are that it will be neither of those because Charlton has been the face of Manchester United for years. As much as we all want him to stay around for many more, the great man will turn 73 in October and it’s only a matter of time before he will need to be replaced by a new club icon. So who could possibly be a better choice than Ryan Giggs, a one club legend who is likely to end his glorious career at the age of 37? It’s therefore a little disappointing to see speculation that Giggs could end up spending his retirement in the United States.

It may be common knowledge but well worth repeating that there is nobody, anywhere who has devoted so many years of his life to Manchester United. Sir Bobby Charlton signed for the club as a schoolboy on January 1, 1953 and apart from a couple of short spells elsewhere after his retirement, has remained at Old Trafford ever since. Stop and think about that for a moment, 57 of his 72 years have been spent serving the one club which virtually became his life.

The two glamour clubs had produced that dramatic 1999 Nou Camp final where United completed a historic treble in the dying seconds of a game which appeared certain to reward Bayerns almost entire 90 minutes of dominance with a deserved 1-0 victory until football proved that miracles can and do happen!
