Sir Alex Ferguson has spent 25 years as the manager of Manchester United and he has won the Premier League 12 times, FA Cup 5 times, League Cup 4 times, the Champions League twice, 10 Community/Charity Shields and one each of the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup, Intercontinental Cup, FIFA World Club Cup and UEFA Super Cup. In his time, he has build and rebuilt at least 4 teams that have contributed in a large part to the trophies he has won and the legacy he has built at Old Trafford. The biggest and the highlight of all his achievements would undoubtedly be the Treble of 1999. Hours away from our big FA Cup tie against our neighbours and current Premier League leaders, Manchester City, let’s look back to understand how special the Treble triumph was. What better way to do that then by assessing the trophies that we missed out on, on a couple of occasions as one of Sir Alex’s great teams went close to winning the Treble before and after 1999.

As Sir Alex Ferguson once famously exclaimed ‘Football…Bloody Hell’. Perhaps it would have been appropriate for him to say ‘FA Cup…There's No Logic’ after Blue Square League minnows Crawley Town went to Old Trafford and came agonisingly close to taking Manchester United to an FA Cup fifth round replay which Ferguson desperately wanted to avoid. United had even took the lead in less than half an hour which should have opened the floodgates instead, the complete underdogs finished well on top of the Premier League leaders!

Premier League giants did not quite slip on the Crawley Town banana skin but they certainly had a few stumbles. The non league minnows put up a brave performance going down to the lone Wes Brown 28 minute header at Old Trafford but only the width of the crossbar prevented what would have been a deserved, injury time equaliser. In the end, an under strength United survived the tie to go through to the FA Cup quarter Finals.

Reserve team matches are not exactly seen as a highlight on the season’s calendar but Manchester United’s clash with City on Tuesday night had more than the normal level of interest. United fielded a side worth £48 million against their multi millionaire neighbors in the 3-1 victory in the Manchester Senior Cup at Hyde's Ewen Fields ground. Brazilian midfielder Anderson returned to action for the first time since suffering cruciate ligament damage in February by making a 60 minute appearance.
