Ever since former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan was voted Golden Ball winner for best player at the 2010 World Cup there have been calls from many quarters for Sir Alex Ferguson to bring the Uruguay hit man back to Old Trafford. But the odds of it ever happening can only be described as highly remote at best. Ferguson simply does not sign players of his age unless he’s faced with exceptionally dire circumstances. Forlan nevertheless has fond memories of his time at Old Trafford - as manutd.com discovered when it had a chat with him prior to United’s recent 1-0 defeat of Valencia.

The Portuguese coach was sacked as national team manager last week after he was banned for six months by Portugal's anti doping authority. He was alleged to have insulted drug testers as they arrived at Portugal's pre World Cup training camp ahead of their departure to South Africa.

Ask many fans for their opinion of the midfielder, and the first response you will probably receive is “big-game bottler”, a reputation that was firmly cemented for Carrick following his performance against Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final.

The 29 year old is one of five players summoned by the French Football Federation to face a disciplinary hearing scheduled for later this month.
One quality that Manchester United has an abundance of is confidence. Some rivals have often mistaken it for arrogance but nothing can be further from the truth. The old saying that success breeds success has never been better illustrated than it has at Old Trafford over the last 20 years as the silverware came in season after season. That very success is what instills the confidence into everyone connected with the club as the latest issue of Inside United shows. The magazine gives 10 reasons why the 2010-11 season will belong to United…and that perceived arrogance has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Rightly or wrongly, the Guardian is one outlet which has built up more credibility than most so when the following article appeared in their weekend edition it was difficult to ignore completely. The comment which must have raised most eyebrows was the one that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was “particularly ambiguous when he was asked directly, on four occasions, whether it was true the deposed Premier League champions were after the man who helped to eliminate England from the World Cup.”
