Sunderland 0 vs Manchester United 1 (Nani)

If ever a single game reflected an entire season, this 1-0 defeat of a feisty Sunderland by Manchester United at the Stadium of Light must go mighty close to it. They enjoyed a confident enough start in which Nani put his side ahead just before the half hour with a sharp finish at the end of a fluid move involving no lass than six one touch passes. That confidence slowly disappeared during a nervous second half in which a stretched defence had to work hard to protect that slender lead.

Sir Alex Ferguson will have defenders Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown available for Saturday’s clash with Spurs and has warned Chelsea that his Manchester United players are “lifted and charged up” by moving to within a point of the Premier League leaders but he also recognised the dangers posed by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford when he described them as the best team from White Hart Lane he had seen in nearly a quarter of a century in English football.

Manchester United star John O’Shea has revealed how asthma nearly ended his Old Trafford dream. The 28-year-old Manchester United and Republic of Ireland star who has been out for most of the season from a freak leg injury that he suffered in the France v Ireland game in Paris last year, admitted that his football career nearly ended before it began.

Watching former Manchester United starlets Jonathan Greening and Erik Nevland bravely battling away for Fulham in a vain attempt to try and salvage something for their club last weekend one could not help but wonder how often they must have thought of what might have been when looking back on their careers.
The 31 year old Greening made 14 senior appearances in midfield during his 3 years at Old Trafford between 1998 and 2001 before going on to build a decent career for himself at Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion then settling at Fulham last year. Read the full story
