They’ve come from all four corners of the globe to form Manchester City’s all star £200million squad and on Friday they gathered at Stockport train station as they prepared to head to London for Saturday’s FA Cup semi final against bitter rivals Manchester United. So despite all their Carlos Tevez billboards, the pretence and the many vehement denials by City fans, here’s the irrefutable proof that City is, after all, the club which represents Stockport.

The man has won everything there is to win at club level in a long career that will come to an end next month EXCEPT an FA Cup winners medal. 40 year old Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar now has one last chance to complete his collection but there are still two more tough challengers to overcome before he can sit back and say ‘mission accomplished’. Typical of the Dutchmans complete professionalism, he is not allowing that goal to distract him from the task of defeating Manchester City in the Wembley semi final.

There’s a dangerous tendency amongst football fans – of every club, to put the cart before the horse and the Manchester United ones are no different. If it’s been heard once it’s been heard a thousand times. “The FA Cup Semi Final derby on Saturday is the Final with the winner certain to lift the Cup at the end of May” REALLY? Is that not being a little presumptuous? Cup Finals have been riddled with underdogs coming out on top for over a century. Remember Sunderland beating Leeds United, Wimbledon doing the same against Liverpool and indeed, Southampton denying Manchester United? Every one of those winners were complete outsiders before causing their boilovers.
