Manchester United went throw to the next round of Carling cup after defeating Barnsley away at Oakwell Stadium in the fourth round of the competition which United won last year. Two goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen were enough to see the reds through.
Sir Alex Ferguson started the game with players who didn’t start against Liverpool plus some players from the reserve team. It took United 6 minutes only to break the deadlock after Anderson bended in an accurate corner to find unmarked Danny Welbeck who nodded in at the near post.
In the second half Welbeck was replaced by Zoran Tosic. Six minutes after the half time, Michael Owen got his name in the score sheet, he received a throw-in with his back to goal, turned well and exploded towards goal with a nut-meg before bending a fine effort into the bottom corner.
Two minutes after Owen goal, Skipper Gary Neville sent off after a challenge on Barnsley’ Hammill. So that Sir Alex replaced Michael Owen with Ritchie De Laet to fill the gap on the right back.
The game continued with a balanced show. Sir Alex again gave a chance for another youngster when Campbell-Ryce was brought on. In the 86th minute, Ben Foster could be in trouble again after a sloppy clearance as Bogdanovic was flagged offside from the resulting play.
Barnsley could do better after Neville saw red. But a lack of quality in the final third proved their downfall and United keep the score 2-0 to win the game.
