Manchester United has avoided fellow favourites Arsenal in the fourth round of the Carling Cup by being handed a home meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers. The tie is one of three all Premiership clashes with Arsenal travelling to Newcastle and West Ham at home to Stoke City.
The ties will be played on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 October
After defeating bitter rivals Tottenham 4-1 in midweek, Arsenal have been drawn to face Newcastle. The Magpies were in the hat thanks to a brilliant 4-3 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and must now face another premier opponent from London in Arsene Wenger’s Gunners.
Northampton Town who sensationally knocked out Liverpool at Anfield have been denied a glamour tie and will face Ipswich Town. With Arsenal facing Newcastle, Aston Villa may feel that the draw is opening up for them and Gerard Houllier’s side will be expected to win at home to Burnley who defeated Premier League opposition in Bolton in the third round.
Birmingham, West Brom and Wigan face lower league opposition in Brentford, Leicester and Swansea respectively, while an all Premier League encounter pits West Ham against Stoke City.
The full draw is
