“Football, f*****g hell” was all Sir Alex Ferguson could say after the Nou Camp miracle back in 1999 and he must be saying the same thing now after Bayern Munich came back from the dead to eliminate Manchester United on away goals despite going down 2-3 in a dramatic Champions League quarter final. Bayern’s two away goals at Old Trafford made all the difference leaving United lamenting what might have been.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s calculated gamble paid off as Manchester United remained top of the table without the services of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand. He admitted the England duo would both have been risked in this tricky visit to Bolton had United’s need been dire. Instead, with a crunch clash with Chelsea splitting a Champions League quarter final against Bayern Munich, the Red Devils chief decided to let the pair nurse a bruised foot and groin injury respectively.
