Sir Alex Ferguson has stepped up his efforts to recruit a long term replacement for Edwin van der Sar by bidding £15 million to land Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. The Manchester United manager will have the 23 year old assessed when his club play Bordeaux on Saturday after identifying the young France World Cup keeper as one of the best in Europe.
For months now Sir Alex Ferguson has been happy to tell anyone who cares to listen that he can spend the £80million from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo but has decided against it because of highly inflated prices. As he now sifts through the wreckage of a failed Champions League campaign however, he must face the truth that his current squad is simply not good enough to rule Europe.
At some point during the next season Sir Alex Ferguson will have to make a decision which will be present him with an agonising dilemma. Goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar will turn 40 in six months time and while the giant Dutchman continues to show the same class that has been his hallmark throughout his long career, the time is fast approaching for him to hang up his gloves.
