Two goals from Dimitar Berbatov and a first goal from Wayne Rooney saw Manchester United recording there first victory in Group E against Danish side’s Aab Aalborg. Berbatov finally scored his first goal with Manchester United and this will be a big boost for our team who is looking to keep the Uefa Champions League trophy at Old Trafford for the second year in row.
Sir Alex Ferguson had sprung a major selection surprise by handing a debut to 18-year-old Rafael Da Silva. However, the Brazilian just brought more attacking emphasis to the visitors’ play.
Berbatov had a chance to score after just six minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo half-blocked Zaza’s clearance but the Bulgarian could not bend his body quickly enough to turn the ball into an empty net.
An early worry has appeared due to Paul Scholes, who seems set for a spell on the sidelines after damaging knee ligaments. This injury saw Giggs replaced Scholes. The Welshman has no time to show some of his mature magic, he received a pass from Nani and sent it to Rooney who was running to the middle from the left flank. Rooney darted past Michael Beauchamp and slotted home beyond Zaza.
Nothing changed in the second half, United were attacking and Aalborg defenders trying to avoid receiving another goal. In the 55th minutes Berbatov collected the ball after Augustinussen dwelled in possession on the edge of the Aalborg box. The Bulgarian captain advanced to fire the ball into Aalborg goal to open his account for the Red Devils.
After 13 mintues, Rafael called off to give a way to Wes Brown. Rafael did very well during the game to receive a well praise from his manager.
Just ten minutes before the end. Cristiano Ronaldo called for the ball from Tevez and had a nice run down the right wing and before reaching the box he crossed the ball to Berbatov who sent the ball home by a superb half-volley. The Manchester United forward was eight yards from goal and seemed very pleased with that strike.
After the full time, Cristiano Ronaldo was pleased for his team-mate Berbatov after opening his account for Manchester United.
“It’s good. It’s good for Berba to score his first goals for Manchester,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports.
“He played good. It’s always good for the forwards to score to keep the confidence high.”
Meanwhile, Sir Alex wasn’t pleased with United finishing during the game, but who didn’t hide his happiness after getting four points from two games in Group E.
“There was some good football at times. As I said we were a bit careless in our finishing,” commented Ferguson.
“Anyway it’s a good foundation to go into the next two matches.”
How did you find the team? Will United miss Paul Scholes?
