Ten minutes is all it took, ten lousy minutes to throw so many lives into turmoil. Many factors have led to the whole sorry drama which has enveloped Wayne Rooney and Manchester United this week, the biggest of which was without doubt the greed for money by both the player and his agent who stands to make a fortune from his percentage of whatever multi million pound package he is certain to negotiate. It has been widely reported that talks between club and agent have been taking place for months and it makes one wonder whether the relatively recent revelations of Rooney’s sexcapades with two prostitutes were the straw that finally broke the camels back for Sir Alex Ferguson.
According to 23 year old vice girl Helen Wood, Rooney immediately realised the gravity of what he had done when she revealed how Rooney was riddled with guilt after the encounter, telling her that “I feel really shit already” while welling up like it was dawning on him what he had to lose and asking “Why the hell did I do that?”
This whole episode took place while the United icon’s wife Coleen waited at their luxury home a few miles away, five months pregnant with his baby son Kai. Panicking Rooney, told Helen and fellow prostitute Jennifer Thompson “I wouldn’t be bothered if she was just my girlfriend. But she’s my WIFE and she’s pregnant with my kid. What am I doing?”
He then pleaded with the two women “I’m begging you two not to say anything. It will ruin my marriage if it gets out. Having a kid means everything to me.”
According to Helen she even sympathized with him “I suddenly felt really sorry for him. Of course I knew he’d cheated on his wife but he just seemed so sad and lost. Most men don’t worry about their career if they’re cheating but because he’s so famous he had double trouble. For ten minutes of fun he’s thrown away his career. His football has gone off the boil and all the fans are finding it easy to put the blame on him.”
How true were those words, how utterly prophetic and how devastating have those ten crazy minutes prove to be for so many people!
Can Rooney get his career back on track away from Old Trafford?
