Was Wayne Rooney’s derby super strike absolutely stunning? Most definitely. Was it spectacular? YES, it took the breath away. Was it a match winner? Without doubt, it sealed all three points for United because City were never going to come back after that. Will it bring a record 19th title to Old Trafford? Very likely. Was it the greatest ever goal scored by Manchester United? NO, and that’s my very honest answer. The truth is that a thousand fans will most likely have a thousand different opinions so I can only speak for myself when I say that to my mind, THIS is the one which will forever stay in my memory, over and above any other.
Yes, it was Ryan Giggs for a ten man United against Arsenal in the 1999 semi final replay during extra time which made the historic treble possible. The question is bound to be asked whether the consequences of that winner made that Giggs stunner remembered as more special than what it really was. There can only be one truthful answer to that, ‘watch it’ then you can decide for yourself.
Rooney’s goal on Saturday was certainly one of the most unforgettable strikes seen at Old Trafford in it’s long history, it may have been the greatest even though that has to be debatable given the dozens of others over the years. As for the one which will forever remain in my memory however, irrespective of where it was scored, that unforgettable winner by Giggs against Arsenal in 1999 is the most special one of all.
