Only last year David De Gea looked certain to leave Old Trafford and return back to his native Spain. However today David De Gea signed an extension to his contract, reportedly worth nearly £400,000 per week.
Whilst the price is a world record for a goalkeeper, fans will agree that on his day he is the best in the world. During the second half of last season, the Spanish international made some rare mistakes which made the media question his ability and focus.
Manchester United fans will hope that the player can regain the form that made him our best player in the past several seasons. The delay in signing the new contract had many doubting if he would remain or simply run his contract out. This four year extension is great for the club and for the future, losing him would have been a major blow.
The Red Devils play away against West Ham on Sunday, it is important that we pick up three points and continue in the challenge for the Premier League title. Whilst Manchester City and Liverpool are favourites for the league, if Ole Gunnar can get the team on a long winning run, similar to last season then this will be sure to build confidence . The addition of the three players, James, Wan-Bissaka and Maguire have somewhat transformed the club. Last season the defense only managed 2 clean sheets, this season we have already matched that.
Here is what David De Gea told Manchester United Journalists
From the moment he arrived here, he showed his faith in me, right from minute one, I think he had a massive impact with the team. Everyone has faith in him, that’s the most important thing.
The fans are behind him and he’s a manager who knows the club really well and the people who work here, and I reckon that is essential.
He also shows a lot of confidence in the younger players, which is important for us, and so he’s a really great manager.”
