The many thousands of Manchester United fans who cannot wait to see the back of a Bulgarian they nicknamed ‘Berbaflop’ will be well advised to remember the Uruguay hitman who was dubbed Diego ‘Forlorn’ during his two and a half years at Old Trafford. Perhaps his 17 goals in a total of 98 appearances warranted his nickname at the time but Forlan has certainly proven his ability to find the net in the five years since.

Thoughts of what might have been can often cross the mind. Watching former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan score crucial goals in both semis and the final for Athletico Madrid which took the Europa Cup to Spain made one wonder whether both the title race and the Champions League quarter final against Bayern Munich may have taken a different turn had he been available to partner Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford this season.
