There are few things in this world that gives more satisfaction than watching an innocent, starry eyed child develop into a mature, successful man. It can happen in any walk of life but more so in football where there are relatively few opportunities in a dog eat dog environment. One such man is Spain and Barcelona central defender Gerard Pique who came to Manchester United from the Spain as a 17 year old and stayed four years before returning home. At the age 24 he is now a World Cup, twice Champions League, twice La Liga and a Premier League winner yet he still rates those early years at Old Trafford under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson as immensely critical to his success.

A nerve wracking final 10 minutes at Old Trafford saw Manchester United safely through to the Champions League quarter finals after a Wes Brown own goal gave Marseille a sniff of getting a late equaliser to qualify on away goals. Javier Hernandez had earlier scored twice to give United what appeared to be some much needed breathing space until Brown headed into his own net from a Marseille corner kick. The overwhelming feeling amongst United fans when the final whistle went was one of sheer relief!

A historic fact first, Manchester United has never lost at home to a French team. That cannot guarantee anything of course but 21 year old central defender Chris Smalling is convinced that the Old Trafford factor can help steer United into the Champions League quarter finals. With the continued absence of Rio Ferdinand, Smalling is assured of partnering captain Nemanja Vidic in the middle of the defence for what promises to be a torrid second leg clash with Marseille. Based on the first leg performance, United has the quality to claim a berth in the last eight but the French champions are dangerous opposition on the break
