Manchester United are on top of the premier league table after defeating Portsmouth in the game which saw Paul Scholes made his 600th appearance for the club. Goals from Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick sent United back on track to keep the premiership trophy at Old Trafford for the third year in row.
Wayne Rooney waited only 9 minutes to break the dead lock. Anderson played a smart pass to Ryan Giggs to set him free on the wing and Giggs sent the ball to Rooney who turned home from just outside the six-yard box.
Sir Alex Ferguson was forced two replace two right backs due to injury. In the 14th minute John O’Shea took the place of Gary Neville. O’Shea could last for 40 minutes before getting a knock after a late challenge from Belhadj and Rafael da Silva came as a replacement.
In the 82 minute Michael Carrick, who replaced Anderson, scored the second goal of the game. Carrick took control of Scholes’ tidy through ball and strike a calm finish across the body of David James and into the bottom right hand corner of the Portsmouth goal.
