Mason Greenwood is one of the brightest talents in the Manchester United youth academy. He is a center forward, who can also play on the left wing.
Greenwood has played in three youth categories this season (U18), (U19) and (U23) and is Manchester United’s top scorer for the season, including the first team. He has scored 26 goals and wrote 9 assists in the 23 appearances across the various youth and reserve levels at the club.
The 17-year old striker has also made the Manchester United first team squad in the last round of the Champions League group stage at Valencia but is yet to make his debut. He led United’s youth team to the first place of the Group H in the UEFA Youth League. He has scored 5 goals on 5 appearances in the competition.
Mason Greenwood is often compared to Robin van Persie, as he has a similar style of play. Both have a great technique, incredible off-ball movement and shoot with their left leg. Greenwood is also good with his right, as he takes the left side set-pieces with his right foot. He is unpredictable, explosive and fast, which are characteristics of a great striker.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to give him a first-team debut before the end of this season, as he already played Thaith Chong in the FA Cup.
As Sir Matt once said if they’re good enough they’re old enough, we’re built on that tradition, we need young players coming through, it’s important in the academy.
I am looking to bring players through, we have two or three top talents in the U18s that are knocking on the door now, we’ve had a couple of injuries and fatigue has been involved but then they’re ready to step up. Neil and Ricky, they keep me filled in.
Mason Greenwood hopes to follow the steps of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard to the first team of Machester United, as a youth academy graduate. We hope that he continues with his development in the right way and we expect him to be one of the leaders of the club in many years to come.
