Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fantastic record as an interim manager of Manchester United might have changed the plans of the club’s board.
When Mourinho was sacked by the club, Solskjaer has been appointed as a caretaker manager and as he said it himself, his job was to get the team ready for the next season.
The Norwegian went on to win 11 out of 13 games in charge of the club and there are already reports that he has discussed the full-time job with the CEO, Ed Woodward.
Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane were the names among the top candidates to become Manchester United’s new manager at the start of the next season. But with the team’s performances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the baby faced assassin is the number one favorite at the moment.
United suffered their first (and only) defeat under the Norwegian against PSG a week ago, but reacted in an excellent manner with the 2-0 victory at the Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
Paul Merson, a Sky Sports pundit believes that Solskjaer will get the job if he wins his next game. And what a game it is – against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
To bounce back like that, I see them going into this game on Sunday with every chance of beating Liverpool. I think if Liverpool come away with anything, it’s a good result. That tells me Ole is doing something right at the moment. If they beat Liverpool, I’d be shocked if he didn’t get it then.
That place was going absolutely nowhere three or four months ago. They’re getting ripped to shreds by PSG at the end of the game, and Ole still has 60,000 people singing his name.
If you’re the owner, you’re sitting there thinking: ‘How great is this?’ Three or four months ago, it would have been toxic.Watching Monday’s game I’d be shocked if they didn’t get in the top four, and I think that’s as big as winning the FA Cup, because they looked a million miles off it. This is the biggest club in the world in my opinion, and they need to be in the Champions League
Manchester United were on the sixth place, 11 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea when Mourinho got sacked, but Solskjaer managed to get the club to the top 4 of the table.
His next game is the biggest one – against the fierce rivals, Liverpool. A win over the Reds might get Solskjaer his dream job – a full-time manager of Manchester United.
An interesting fact is that Jose Mourinho’s last game in charge of the Red Devils was the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. Obviously, there is something special in the clash of the most successful English clubs this season.
Ole’s United has already won against Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea (all games as visitors). We hope that the outcome will be the same on Sunday.
