As Truly Reds reported weeks ago, Manchester United have finally reached an agreement with Leicester City for England defender Harry Maguire.
The two clubs in the running for his signature were both Manchester United and Manchester City, with the Reds succeeding. Aside from the medical taking place this weekend, the deal is confirmed and will be announced Monday although not yet official.
The deal means Maguire will eclipse the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018. At the time, many critics argued that this price was too high for the Dutch player. However he was arguably the best defender in the world last season.
This is a statement of intent from Manchester United to get back to the top where we belong. For us to get the best players, we now have to spend big. Whilst some of our major signings haven’t worked out as expected, we believe this won’t be one of those.
Huge Price Tag
£80 Million is a world record fee for a central defender and with that comes huge pressure to perform. However, there is a reason why the player costs so much, because of the huge talent he is quality of defending.
This is a huge signing for the Red Devils and one in which many fans will be happy to see. Whilst we didn’t have the lure of the Champions League this season, Harry Maguire understands the amazing opportunity he has by choosing Old Trafford. The team as a whole will benefit from this signing, of which his confidence on the ball will instill calm in the defence, which last season was not the case.
Future Captain
The leadership skills of Harry Maguire are that of a captain and many pundits have already stated his future at Old Trafford will be the captain. Many players that come to Manchester United are great when we are winning but when times are difficult over the past few seasons there have only been a handful of players who have turned into leaders, Harry Maguire will be one of those. These leadership qualities are extremely hard to find and this makes him an extremely valuable defender.
This is our third summer signing following Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, all of which will be challenging to start the opening game against Chelsea. We now have seven central defenders in the squad at Old Trafford, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe.
Will He Succeed?
Even though the pressure will be on to perform playing at the biggest team in the world, we at truly reds believe he has all the qualities to succeed at the highest level. What are your thoughts? Is he worth the high transfer fee?
