The annual Charity Shield – sorry, it’s called The FA Community Shield these days, is nearly upon us again which usually means a nice day out at Wembley for Manchester United fans…and precious little else. It’s a trophy that United has lifted 17 times in its history, 13 outright and 4 shared, which is more than any other club but does anyone really care?
There were many eyebrows raised when news came through that Chelsea’s unwanted Joe Cole signed a four year deal with Liverpool after hawking himself to half a dozen clubs. Before anyone throws the accusation that Manchester United fans are obsessed with what goes on at Anfield, it has to be made clear that irrespective of where Cole ended up going, these comments would have been precisely the same.
It is not often that an end of season Manchester derby is just as important to City as it is to United but Saturday’s clash could go a long way towards deciding whether the home side can break up England’s big four. As for United, they are of course not out of the Premier League title race but even victory at Eastlands would still leave Chelsea strong favourites for the silverware.
