Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson pulled off one of the shock transfer deals of the season in July last year when he convinced 30 year old former England international Michael Owen to sign for him on a free transfer. The canny Scot is now reported to be poised for an encore by offering Chelsea play maker Joe Cole a contract to continue his career at Old Trafford.

While Manchester United defender Wes Brown admits to being disappointed on missing out on Fabio Capello’s provisional 30 man England World Cup squad, team mate Gary Neville was under no illusions of how tough it would be after not being part of the squad for a year.
Despite United boss Sir Alex Ferguson pushing for Neville’s international recall, Capello chose to ignore him, opting instead for Liverpool’s Glen Johnson as the only specialist right back.

A move that has been on the cards for most of the season now appears to be imminent after Manchester United accepted a £6m bid from Birmingham City which will take goalkeeper Ben Foster to St Andrews. It will end a difficult period for the England international who failed to take a chance to be first choice at Old Trafford. He made several high profile blunders when deputising for Edwin van der Sar before Christmas allowing the Dutch veteran to reclaim his place once he had recovered from injury.
