Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher cannot disguise the disappointment he experienced with Manchester United last season. Failing to win a fourth successive Premiership title by the narrowest of margins was a bitter pill for him to swallow so he cannot wait for the new campaign to kick off because he fully expects matters to be put right come next May.

For the last 50 years Ken Ramsden went from office junior to ticket office manager, programme editor, press officer, assistant secretary through the ranks to club secretary. But Ramsden’s Manchester United journey is over and the Ordsall born son of a Salford foundry worker and an Old Trafford laundry lady has retired. The first thing that strikes you about Manchester United’s multi million pound, hi tech training ground is that nothing actually strikes you at all. No road signs to mark the way. Camouflaged by an electricity sub station on one side and a chemical plant on the other.
