It’s difficult not to be cynical in this day and age when every media outlet is trying to outdo its rivals with a sensational story. The Manchester United Evening News can usually be relied upon to present rational, believable news but even I find the revelation that Sir Alex Ferguson will be handed “his biggest ever transfer war chest, with more than £100m to spend in January and at the end of the season” difficult to swallow. Sorry, I simply cannot buy it. If, and it’s a mighty big IF, there’s any truth in it, the Glazers must be looking at rewarding Ferguson with an unexpected windfall for 25 years of service before he walks off into the sunset at the end of next season! Does anyone find the following even remotely believable?

Watching the thumping Barcelona inflicted on Real Madrid at the Camp Nou in the Classico last night, my mind could not help wandering what major football clubs – including Manchester United, has in store for their fans in the next 10 or 20 years. A world wide audience of half a billion viewers – read that slowly, yes, 500 million, was estimated to have watched that game on television, internet, mobile phones and whatever else modern technology can provide. Ask yourself, what else will that same technology be able to offer us in the next decade or two?

What could turn out to be a pivotal moment and turning point in the Manchester United fans movement against the Glazer ownership of the club took place on Saturday afternoon in the centre of Manchester, with roughly 200 United fans, fully equipped with Eric Cantona masks, “flashmobbing” Glazer sponsor Thomas Cook’s branch outside of the Arndale Centre in a legal, peaceful and non-violent protest organised by the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST).
