All the odds point to the Premier League Championship being surrendered on Sunday afternoon despite the certainty that Manchester United will fight until the bitter end to retain it for a record breaking fourth successive season. Unfortunately reality shows that the outcome is not in their hands with Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti just as desperate to snatch it away in his first season in English football.

Manchester United had a new Portuguese star to acclaim as Nani emerged the late match winner against Tottenham Hotspur with a moment of brilliance to send the Red Devils top of the Barclays Premier League. Filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s boots was always going to be a tall order and Nani may never quite get there but even Ronaldo would have applauded the nerveless chip that broke Tottenham hearts 10 minutes from time after he had raced onto Federico Macheda’s lay-off.

It has been a miserable few days for Manchester United after crashing out of the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich and being knocked off the top of the table by Chelsea last weekend. With Chelsea in the FA Cup and Arsenal having a rest ahead of their trip to Spurs next Wednesday, United have the chance to return to the top of the Premier League.
