Let me admit that I’m a curious old bugger, even cynical, so when a thought enters my head I cannot help but continue to question. There have been many times when my addition of two plus two resulted in anything but four yet I continue to wonder. Example – my eyebrows were raised before the FA Cup semi final on Saturday when the Manchester United squad was announced. Not so much, I might add, by the starting eleven but with the bench which consisted of Kuszczak, Fabio, Smalling, Gibson, Anderson, Owen, Hernandez. My first question was “Where’s Ryan Giggs?”
As late as 24 hours before the game, the Manchester United Official website reported that Sir Alex Ferguson had no fresh injury concerns ahead of the derby “Everyone is fit from the other night” revealed the boss “we’re missing Wayne Rooney obviously which is the only downside. We’ve got a strong squad – our bench the other night reflect that.”
The site went on to specify that the only derby day absentees were the suspended Jonny Evans and Rooney while Darren Fletcher, Owen Hargreaves and Anders Lindegaard were injured.
Giggs was universally commended for an inspired performance against Chelsea on Tuesday night which should have at least guaranteed a place on the bench in case his experience was required late in the game. Instead, he was mysteriously, completely omitted from the squad with no explanation!
Can there possibly be more than meets the eye with what appears to be Giggs’ mysterious omission? For the sake of my suspicious, speculative mind, can somebody please offer some sort of a logical reason?
Where you also surprised that Giggs was not even on the bench at Wembley?
