You have to hand it to good old ‘arry. The Tottenham Hotspur manager went to a lot of trouble in his vain attempt to lure England captain Rio Ferdinand away from Old Trafford but as was to be expected, Sir Alex Ferguson soon told Harry Redknapp were to go. The Spurs medical department was even instructed to study the nature of Ferdinand’s injuries and were convinced that they could get 100 games out of him over the next two seasons.

Manchester United super striker Wayne Rooney continued to collect awards when he was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year on Tuesday night to add to his Football Writer’ Footballer of the Year and the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year gongs. In addition, Rooney also received awards for Best Fan’s Player of the Year and Best Goal of the Year at the Manchester United Player Awards night.

THE colours of Newton Heath being worn by disillusioned fans at Old Trafford has been one of the enduring images of the season. As the anger towards the Glazers has increased so has the number of green and gold scarves appearing in the crowd at Manchester United matches. In a desperate attempt to appease their supporters the club has announced a freeze on season ticket prices. Yet yesterday, a far more significant announcement was made in one of the world’s most famous footballing cities.
