Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was deemed to be free to face Manchester United at Old Trafford last Sunday after avoiding a suspension for violent conduct following his clash with Michael Brown during the 4-1 Anfield defeat of Portsmouth. Referee Stuart Attwell insisted that he had witnessed the incident, hence his decision to award a free kick to Portsmouth leaving the FA’s disciplinary unit unable to take further action against Gerrard.

Owen Hargreaves is hoping to play a part in Manchester United’s run in after making his comeback from a long term knee injury in the reserves. The midfielder has not played a first team game for United since September 2008 and has encountered several setbacks en route to a return to action. The England international was originally predicted to be back last autumn, but finally pulled on a United shirt again when playing 45 minutes for the reserves against Burnley last night.

“It never rains but it pours” so the old saying goes. Manchester has long been renowned for being a wet old town due to the large amount of rain that it gets but when it comes to football on the red side of the City, it has been pouring down this season – injuries that is!
