At the end of 12 turbulent days which have almost certainly destroyed a season that had unexpectedly produced so much, everyone at Manchester United must now pick themselves up, see out a season in which for all its promise will most likely not produce anything more substantial than the often maligned Carling Cup, then start planning for a new challenge come next August.

A Premier League season which has already given us so many twists and turns may yet produce another delicious irony which no movie script writer could possibly make up without stretching the imagination to its absolute limit. Without wishing to appear as if chickens are already being counted let’s have a look at what the last weeks of the season will be throwing up. Liverpool are scheduled to face title contenders Chelsea at Anfield on the first day of May in its final home match of the season.

Manchester United will be the ones on red alert when Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday for a Premier League match neither side can afford to lose. United were thumped 4-1 by Liverpool at home last March and still went on to win the championship but the stakes are higher than ever now.
The league leaders are just two points clear of Chelsea, who have a game in hand and no Champions League to distract them after being dumped out by Inter Milan, and Arsenal as the season enters the final stages.
