New Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish came to Old Trafford, saw, then went home vanquished and out of the FA Cup. The desperately hoped for turn of fortunes for the beleaguered club never materialised as the new 'messiah' saw his side defeated with a second minute Ryan Giggs penalty, followed by a red card to captain Steven Gerrard just after the half hour. Manchester United now goes forward to visit Southampton in the fourth round while Liverpool realistically only has the Europa League to play for during the rest of the season.

Manchester United fans have celebrated icons like Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs for two decades but spare a thought for the countless number of starry eyed kids who fall by the wayside for a variety of reasons – some through no other fault than their own. Belfast boy Gareth Macklin was one of them as Bob Cass from the MailOnline discovered. A treasured photo illustrates the ultimate schoolboy dream. A beaming 14 year old signs the paper which will open the door to a glittering football career with the world’s most famous club. There to witness the moment are two proud parents and Sir Alex Ferguson. That was 16 years ago.

The Premier League was introduced to English football in 1992-93 with Manchester United claiming the first two titles but then a determined Blackburn Rovers came along in 1994-95 to prevent a hat trick. Together with a moment of madness from cult hero Eric Cantona at Crystal Palace, a third successive title was narrowly prevented by a big spending Rovers side managed by former Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.
