While Nani was turning on a dazzling performance in Portugals’ 3-1 home defeat of Denmark, Darren Fletcher and Scotland went down 0-1 to the Czech Republic in Prague to leave the Scots trailing in second place behind Spain in their group. Manchester United defender Patrice Evra is relieved to put his South African summer of discontent behind and concentrate on the imminent Premier League season ahead. The 29 year old is one of five players summoned by the French Football Federation to face a disciplinary hearing scheduled for later this month. As team captain Evra is facing sanctions for leading a player revolt at the World Cup but feels that he is being unfairly punished and says he wants to wear his country’s colours once again.

The shrewd Manchester United manager may now have hit the jackpot again with the £7m acquisition of Mexico striker Javier Hernandez, himself admitting that “On the back of his performances in South Africa, a lot of teams would have been after him and he would probably have cost us two or three times as much”. In addition to that, the club website received 50,000 new registrations from Mexico alone within 24 hours of announcing his signing from Chivas de Guadalajara in April ensuring that plenty of number 14 shirts will be bought by Mexicans this season.
