Sir Alex “We must either use them or we lose them”


It only seems like yesterday but it has been all of 15 years since former Liverpool star and BBC football pundit Alan Hansen coined his memorable phrase “You’ll never win anything with kids” following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1995-96 campaign. Those “kids” of course went on to win the double by the end of that season forcing the unfortunate Hansen to forever be stuck with those words.

Ryan Giggs should become the new face of United


Mention the name of Sir Bobby Charlton anywhere in the world and what’s the first thing that comes to mind? England 1966? World Cup Winner? The odds are that it will be neither because Charlton has been the face of the global Manchester United brand for years. As much as we all want him to stay around for many more, the great man will turn 73 in October and it’s only a matter of time before he will need to be replaced by a new club icon. So who could be a better choice than Ryan Giggs, a one club legend who is likely to end his glorious career at the age of 37? It’s therefore disappointing to see speculation that Giggs could end up spending his retirement in the United States.

Who can ever forget Tommy Docherty at United?


Having been fortunate enough to become attracted to the magic of  Manchester United just prior to going into my teens a couple of years before Munich, I have lived through the eras of every Old Trafford manager since then, from the great Sir Matt Busby to the incredible success of Sir Alex Ferguson. Those two legends have left their own legacy to both the club and to English football itself which is unlikely to ever be matched.

There was however, one other manager in between who has left an immense impression which still remains today, even after more than 30 years. Despite his many shortcomings, Tommy Docherty was that man, a name which may not mean much to many of today’s younger generation of fans but who still evokes memories of those unpredictable days of the seventies.
