In a sensational book about Wayne Rooneys meteoric rise up the ladder of English football, former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is reported to have played a key role in persuading the Manchester United super striker to leave his agent several months before the then Everton player’s contract had been due to expire and sign with the Proactive agency where Dalglish had 2 million shares which at one stage were worth £860,000.

Wayne Rooney is the new Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year after he was announced as the runaway winner. The announcement that the England striker has won the award means that it is the fourth successive season that an Old Trafford player has received the accolade. Ryan Giggs won the award last year following on from Cristiano Ronaldo, who was player of the year in the two previous seasons.

There are players who have flogged their guts out for their clubs throughout their whole careers without ever knowing what it’s like to hold a winning Premier League medal – think Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. It was heard as late as last Saturday, a cry of “Lucky United”. It’s said that luck evens itself out, but does it?
