After waiting for what must have felt like an eternity, Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick got the news that he so desperately wanted when he was named in the squad of 23 for England’s World Cup campaign together with team mates Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney. After failing to get any game time in last Sundays 2-1 defeat of Japan, Carrick was considered to be extremely doubtful of making the cut.

With the World Cup now less that two weeks away, Manchester United’s South Africa bound internationals were involved in a busy weekend playing a number of warm up matches for their countries. The most interesting action did not involve football however but the sight of Serbia stand in Nemanja Vidic playing the role of peacemaker as he picked up a microphone and urged fellow Serbs for calm as his side suffered a shock 0-1 defeat to New Zealand in Austria.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson pulled off one of the shock transfer deals of the season in July last year when he convinced 30 year old former England international Michael Owen to sign for him on a free transfer. The canny Scot is now reported to be poised for an encore by offering Chelsea play maker Joe Cole a contract to continue his career at Old Trafford.

The World Cup is well and truly around the corner with six Manchester United players involved in warm up matches on Monday night. Nemanja Vidic and Zoran Tosic’s Serbia will be playing against New Zealand on Saturday followed by two more warm up matches with Poland and Cameroon, while Patrice Evra also has three matches lined up for France against Costa Rica, Tunisia and China

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has urged the club’s supporters to stop protesting against the Glazer family’s ownership and instead show their backing for the club. Foster secured a £6 million move from United to Birmingham this week and the 27 year old’s remarks are likely to stir up anger in the supporters he is leaving behind at Old Trafford.

A clearly disappointed Owen Hargreaves wants to have showdown talks with Sir Alex Ferguson after being axed from both the Manchester United and England squads. The midfielder is due on United’s pre season tour of America and Mexico in July but before that he wants to know the extent of Ferguson’s part in him being left out of England’s 30 man World Cup squad after initially being named in it.
